Day 30: Regina Spektor

Welcome to to the final day of the 30 day period, I hope that you have enjoyed the journey and that I have helped expand your musical horizons. Although I may take a day or two respite, Mulatto Music will continue, possibly in a slightly different format. In celebration of day 30 I decided to do an Artist Feature today rather than just a song.

Regina Spektor is quirky, curious, silly, serious, and just plain adorable. She is a splendid and inventive songwriter whose songs often require a lot of thought to interpret. Some of her songs come from dreams, making them appear at first listen to make no worldly sense. She is a classically trained pianist born in Moscow and raised in New York. Her voice is hauntingly brilliant and her childlike personality is priceless. She is occasionally known for breaking into random beatboxing. Regina is a True Artist, and one that certainly dances to the beat of her own drum.

Song: Human Of The Year
Album: Far (2009)

Forget the TIME Man Of The Year Award, in this wonderful song average joe Karl Projectorinski has been named Human Of The Year. In what seems to be a critique of our society's idolization of arbitrary figures, or possibly a critique on religion (or both), Regina delivers with sardonically beautiful lyrics and haunting vocalization. Check out these lyrics:
"Why are you so scared?
You stand there shaking in the pew.
The icons are whispering to you,
they're just old men,
like on the benches in the park,
except their balding.. spots are glistening with gold".

Song: Samson
Album: Songs (2002)

In this reference to the long haired biblical strong man Regina puts forth a bone-chilling vocal performance. Her work on piano is the perfect complement to her angelic voice.

Listen Here!

Song: Folding Chair
Album: Far (2009)

The playful side of Regina is out in full force for Folding Chair and you just can't help but smile. She gives a wonderful perspective on feminine insecurity and celebrates the beauty in functionality rather than aesthetics with an instantly classic line:
"I've got a perfect body, but sometimes I forget
I've got a perfect body, 'cause my eyelashes catch my sweat".
This upbeat song is nostalgic and sounds lighthearted, but there seems to be heavier subject matter beneath the surface. See if you can decipher.

Listen Here!

Lyrics Here¡

And one for good luck...

Song: Laughing With
Album: Far (2009)

In this song Regina showcases her incredible songwriting. She travels back and forth from somber to serious to funny and contemplative all within a matter of about 3 and a half minutes.
"No one's laughing at God...(but..)
God can be funny
When told he'll give you money if you just pray the right way
And when presented like a genie
Who does magic like Houdini
Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket and Santa Claus"
Surely you recognize what a wonderful songstress Regina is, yes?

Lyrics Here¡

For more Regina start off with her first breakthrough album Begin To Hope, next get Far, Soviet Kitsch, and Songs. If you fall in love with Regina, don't be surprised, and be sure to also get 11:11 and keep in mind that she has many, many live songs yet to be released.

Thank You all for the support, comments, feedback, and motivation to keep going for these past 30 days, I couldn't have done it without you. It, obviously, would have meant nothing without you.

Thank You

Signing off (for now). -Sir Gabriel

"I don't wanna say goodbye to you, so I'll just say goodnight to you..."

Day 29: Champion

This is for ALL the haters, and who's got more than Kanye West? A recent comment someone made about Kanye in my presence made me realize that some people will hold a grudge against an artist simply because he is popular, talented, or cocky, and no matter how good his music is some people's ears will always be deaf to it. It has been strange, and eye opening during these past almost 30 days to see how narrow some minds and ears are to such a wide range of really good music. I've been guilty of it myself, but I pledge to be open to music of all kinds, the same way I try to withhold judgment when meeting a new person for the first time. A big mistake people tend to make is thinking they've figure someone out based on a few interactions. My request is that you listen today as if you've never heard of Kanye West. I guarantee if you do you are bound to like his music. To set the record straight, sampling is not stealing, you must get permission from the original artist. Sampling in of itself is an art form, it is not simply rapping over the original song. And sampling has been used in hip-hop since the beginning. Kanye West is much more than a pop star, he is an Artist.

Song: Champion
Artist: Kanye West
Album: Graduation (2008)

As motivational as a speech from Tony Robbins,
"When it feel like livin's harder than dyin'
For me givin' up's way harder than tryin',"
Champion is for the hero inside you, it celebrates who you are and all that you have done for so many people. "Did you realize that you were a champion in their eyes?" Many people fail to see that they are someone's hero, this song is a tribute to the unsung heroes of the world who have lifted up the fallen and helped them to see their true worth.
"They used to feel invisible, now they know they invincible!"
It's time you face the facts, Kanye West is an essential artist for any true music fans' collection. Stop hatin' and start appreciatin'.

For more Kanye West listen to Flashing Lights, Street Lights, As I Am, Gone, and Through The Wire.

Still want more? Pick up The College Dropout, Late Registration, Graduation, and 808's & Heartbreak.

Hey man, don't be blind to a shining star.

Who's gonna be featured in the last of the 30 days? Find out tomorrow!

Day 28: What Can I Say (For Millicent)

If Prince is 12 o'clock and Lenny Kravitz is 6 o'clock, right now it's about 2:30. Neo soulster Van Hunt is an artist who, quite simply, should be more well known. Hunt, writer of Dionne Farris' Hopeless, released his self titled debut album in 2004 followed by On The Jungle Floor in '06, and in '07 he completed work for his third album, Popular, but sadly his now former record company refused to release it. Undeterred, Hunt is currently working on his fourth album slated for an early 2010 release, which will be done independently. Van Hunt is an incredible songwriter whom I was first introduced to by my Beautiful girlfriend, Shiba, and I am glad to have made his acquaintance.

Song: What Can I Say (For Millicent)
Artist: Van Hunt
Album: Van Hunt (2004)

I will narrate the meaning of this song as understood by Shiba. What Can I Say is a heartrending song about a mother figure who has passed away and visits Hunt in his dreams. She's been there through thick and thin, and he can no longer remember the once familiar song she used to sing to him. Though he is crushed to see her go as he wakes, he lives to see her in his dreams and wonders how he can make her stay
"'Cause I love to hate the feeling
Don't want to deal with the morning after
What can I say to keep you down
What can I say to keep you down
What can I say to keep your love around me."
What Can I Say features beautiful piano and expressive instrumentation. While I have heard other interpretations of the lyrics, the preceding is the one that makes the sense, but I invite you to interpret what it means to you.

For more Van Hunt hear these: Seconds Of Pleasure, Anything, Mean Sleep, Precious, and Down Here In Hell (With You).

Day 27: Day Too Soon

We've only got a few days left, but I promise to go out with a BANG. I'll most likely continue Mulatto Music, but probably in a slightly different format.
Day Too Soon is a song by Australian Singer Sia Furler, better known simply as Sia. Sia resembles something like a mash-up of Jewel, Adele, Norah Jones, and Regina Spektor. She has released 4 solo albums, previously she sang with indie band Crisp, and she regularly lends her vocals to UK group Zero 7. Sia has the spirit of a child, and brings a magical feel
ing to her music.

Song: Day Too Soon

Artist: Sia

Album: Some People Have Real Prob
lems (2008)

In this track Prince Charming arrives to Sia's open arms. A beautiful array of instruments, including wonderful piano work and a nicely accenting violin, provide the music to this downtempo song. Well thought lyrics pave the way for unbelievable vocalization
"Now I've been running all my life
I ran away, I ran away from good
Yeah, I've been waiting all my life
You're not a day, you're not a day too soon"
Sia's voice is wonderfully haunting, like a jolly ghost, and her voice is truly irreplicable, even though that's not "really" a word. Sia is a unique artist, who you get the feeling could sing the alphabet song and make it her own. A Youtube comment on an acoustic version of Day Too Soon sums her sound up perfectly: "she is so amazing, i want to have a baking day with her at my house when i watch her and listen to her it's like being in neverland". Like being in Neverland indeed.

Day 26: Stevie Wonder

Stevie Wonder. He is, clearly, far and away, the greatest musical artist of at least the 20th and 21st century, if not the greatest ever. Yes, greater than the Beatles, greater than Aretha, and yes, greater than Michael Jackson. If you asked most musicians who is the greatest, most would probably tell you Stevie. He has a vocal range and control that allows him to go from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows in a matter of seconds. Although he is most noted for playing piano and harmonica there are few instruments that Stevie can not play, and when I say he can play I mean he can PLAY. His musical tenure is long, longer than the Rolling Stones, he released his first single at age 11 in 1961, that's 48 years strong. His creativity and songwriting is simply unmatched, whether the topic is love, spirituality, politics, activism, etc. He has a classic string of 5 albums released in a span of 5 years that no one before or after has even come close to. He played a pivotal role in making Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by hosting a Rally for Peace Press Conference and with his song Happy Birthday. He has won 22 Grammy Awards, the most ever for a solo artist. So yes, he is the greatest, but words futile to express the talent of Stevie Wonder, listen below and see for yourself.
Song: Boogie on Reggae Woman
Album: Fulfillingness' First Finale (1974)

Stevie Wonder shares his naughty intentions with a "reggae woman" over a funky synthesizer and drums, and a bright sounding piano. He adds a harmonica solo to seal the deal.

Listen Here!

Lyrics Here¡

Song: Overjoyed
Album: In Square Circle (1985)

No one can come close to Stevie Wonder at writing a love song. No one. Don't believe me? Then..

Lyrics Here¡

Song: Sugar
Album: Signed, Sealed, and Delivered (1970)

Funky Funky Drums, Bass, and Piano, PLUS Stevie Wonder singing over the track. What more could you ask for? What's most unbelievable? This song wasn't even a single for Stevie.

Listen Here!

Lyrics Here¡

For more Stevie the best way to go is At The Close Of A Century a 4 disc-set spanning over 30 years that includes 70 + Stevie hits. If you still want more, which I certainly do, than you'll be best advised to purchase each of his individual albums.

Day 25: The Blossom Of Parting

Jazz, maybe more than any other kind of music, is very take-it-or-leave-it. It either hits you real hard, or goes right over your head. The Branford Marsalis Quartet is likely to do the former. I actually had the pleasure of seeing them live, and walking out on stage they looked cooler than the underside of the pillow. The foursome is made up of Joey Calderazzo, on keys, Eric Revis, on bass, Justin Faulkner (who replaced Jeff "Tain Watts), on drums, and (you guessed it) Branford Marsalis, on saxophones. Their music is featured in the Spike Lee joint Mo' Better Blues which shares it name with a classic Quartet tune. Branford Marsalis has acted in Throw Momma From The Train and School Daze, he asked out Hillary Banks on The Fresh Prince, and was the predecessor to Kevin Eubanks as band leader of the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The Marsalis name is royalty in the jazz world, his father as well as 3 of his 5 brothers are all jazz musicians. Here's the song for the day.

Song: The Blossom of Parting
Artist: Branford Marsalis Quartet
Album: Metamorphosen

The Blossom of Parting is that instantaneous feeling of missing the one you love the second they close the door, realizing the irrationality of your feeling as they'll be returning soon, but missing them all the same. That beautiful Blossom of a variety of feelings ranging from melancholy to joyfulness. Branford lets his Saxophone tell the story, which it does splendidly, singing a frantic yet mellow song. The Drums of Faulkner whisper in the background, keeping things chronologically accurate, and Calderazzo's Keys contribute a different perspective into this wonderful reminiscence. The Blossom of Parting, the name practically tells the entire tale all by itself.

Be sure to also listen to Mo' Better Blues.

Day 24: Use Somebody

King of Leon. 3 brothers and 1 cousin who all go by their middle name. They're kind of a big deal, or at least so I hear. They are, at the very least, worthy of researching to find out the depth of their artistry. I know for a fact that they have one very good song, and perhaps many more. I plan to find out and I invite you to as well. For now chew on this.

Song: Use Somebody
Artist: King of Leon
Album: Only By The Night (2008)

Kings of Leon has been making quite a stir in recent years, and while I had heard OF them I didn't actually hear them until their recent appearance on Conan. I was a bit skeptical, thinking they would be something like The White Stripes (for whom I harbor much indifference towards). But from the first strum of the guitar I was intrigued. When they began singing "whoa-ohhhh", like something from a dream state, my ears were on end. Use Somebody feels like something I could hear Dave Grohl belting out with the Foo Fighters, and that's not a bad thing.

Day 23: F.W.B.

Let's play word association. Wayne Brady. Chances are you thought things like "cheesy", "funny", and "wholesome". It probably evoked images of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Drew Carey, and Chappelle's Show. Most likely you didn't think of words like "substantial", "musical", and "singer", and you most definitely didn't think of casual sex. Well, you're in for a surprise. Wayne Brady of television fame released his debut album (A Long Time Coming) last year, boasting modest success. On the album Brady commits the sin of covering legends (The Beatles, Sam Cooke, and Stevie Wonder), but manages to sing their songs quite nicely, a hard task to say the least. A Long Time Coming features a classic R&B sound, at times resembling the style of Luther Vandross and Marvin Gaye, but Wayne's own unique sound is clearly present as well. To me, this album is a beautiful reminder that you can never "figure a person out". Wayne Brady, as are we all, is much more complex than what appears on the surface. Wayne definitely gets outside your box. With this album, Wayne proves to be a bonafide Renaissance Man.

Song: F.W.B.
Artist: Wayne Brady
Album: A Long Time Coming (2008)

On this Marvin-Gaye-esque track Brady lays out a proposal to be friends with benefits, no strings attached. Wayne shines throughout as he flexes his silky, sweet vocals over instrumentals that are smooth, cool, and right on point. You may need to adjust your mindset, this is not the Wayne Brady you expected is it?

Sing along with these¡

I know you want a bunch more from Brady, here: Ordinary, I Ain't Movin', Beautiful Ugly, and You And Me. All songs appear on A Long Time Coming.

Day 22: Why (What's Going On?)

What's going on people? By a round of applause how do you feel? Well today I've got something sure to burrow deep inside your ear, enter your prefrontal cortex, and lay seedlings, and sprout up from the surface. The Roots, Philly's own hip-hop band, have been educating fans and elevating the art of hip-hop since 1987. The most prominent members of The Roots are drummer ?uestlove (Questlove), and MC Black Thought. But they feature a full band boasting Vocal, Drums, Keyboards, Percussion, Guitar, Sousaphone, and Bass Guitar. A favorite amongst hip-hop heads, The Roots are adored and respected for their conscious lyrical content and delivery, as well as their skilled instrumentation. Though they have never reached superstar status in terms of record sales, their concerts are always quick to sell out and they recently took over as inhouse band for The Late Show With Jimmy Fallon. Rightfully, often reffered to as "The Legendary Roots Crew", The Roots are a shining example of how God intended hip-hop to sound.

Song: Why (What's Going On?)
Artist: The Roots
Album: The Tipping Point (2004)

A laidback tune from start to finish, track # 10 begins with the chorus: the title of the song being sung/asked over striking instrumentation. Black Thought earns your listening ear with top notch lyrics and delivery.
"It's far from right, I guess that's why it feels so wrong
To see the world get stripped out of every resource
And people pray to Coca-Cola now instead of the gods
What's goin' on?"

The music has a deep, rich quality to it that speaks to my soul. Make sure to follow the link to view the lyrics, they are well worth your while, especially if you're unfamiliar with this genre. Why is a poignant example of how hip-hop can educate.

Day 21: Beauty Contest

Hailing from Anaheim California, weighing in with 2 Grammy awards, No Doubt! Without question my personal favorite band, No Doubt, formed in 86, is an alternative rock/ska band. They consist of guitarist Tom Dumont, drummer Adrian Young, bassist Tony Kanal, and, one of the leading ladies of rock, Gwen Stefani. Recently back on tour, No Doubt plans on a 2010 release for their next album. Their best selling album to date, Tragic Kingdom, catapulted them into stardom in 1995 with songs like Just A Girl, Spiderwebs, and the international smash hit Don't Speak. Backstage at a No Doubt concert you'll find more nannies than groupies (3 of the 4 members have kids), but make no mistake about it, these rock veterans wiser for the years haven't lost a step.

Song: Beauty Contest
Artist: No Doubt
Album: Everything In Time (Compilation Released 2003)

Beauty Contest, a b-side from Return Of Saturn, discusses the crass beauty standards facing women in today's society and the anguish of feeling obligated to adhere to such standards in order to compete. Gwen's uniquely beautiful/beautifully unique voice winds out concise lyrics, not hesitating to cut to the quick,
"Damsel in distress is quite submissive, look how sun burnt my vanity is, effeminate human creature, superficial seducing detour, I'm going to the mall for the cookie cutter, the ugly duckling will always suffer, contaminated standards don't try to fight it, I better get back on my diet".
Backing Stefani is a bass-friendly rhythm drawn out by Tony Kanal, who was surely bobbing his head at the recording sessions. Adding a somewhat ethereal feel, Tom Dumont pulls all the right strings. Adrian Young presents an under the radar, but nice, showing on drums. There's No Doubt about it, Beauty Contest is a cool cut sure to find its way into your iPod.

Day 20: I Am The Living

Jimmy Cliff, one of reggae music last surviving legends, has over 40 years of music in his repertoire. He is also the only living musician to hold the Order Of Merit, the highest possible honour that can be granted by the Jamaican government for achievement in the arts and sciences. He reached the peak of his fame playing 40's criminal Ivanhoe Martin in The Harder The Come in 1972. Since then he has put out nearly an album a year, his last effort coming in 2004 (Black Magic). You've most probably heard his unity driven We Are All One, and maybe you heard his cover of I Can See Clearly Now in the movie Cool Runnings. He is essential for any conversations concerning great reggae music and his music is essential for any true fan of music. Hear it now.

Song: I Am The Living
Artist: Jimmy Cliff
Album: I Am The Living (1980)

In I Am The Living, Cliff voices a we-are-one theme, a common theme in Cliff's music. Jimmy states his omnipotence
"I am the living, and the loving, I'm a shelter in a hail of thunder, I'm the thirst and the hunger, I'm the oldest getting younger".
I Am The Living is a good sampling of the classic Jimmy Cliff sound, featuring rich, lively instrumentation. As he usually does, Cliff manages to speak on an important topic while maintaining that feel-good reggae vibe. You'll be glad to hear that he has many songs as good or better than this one, but for right now, this is the perfect place to start with Jimmy Cliff.

Listen here!

For more Jimmy Cliff listen to Trust No Man, The Harder They Come, Stand Up And Fight Back, and Wonderful World, Beautiful People.

But don't stop there! Get Anthology, a 2 disc set offering 42 of Jimmy's greatest songs. Also be sure to pick up Rhythm Come Forward Vol. II which features 14 classic (some very hard to find) reggae cuts, including 2 by Cliff.

Day 19: Raphael Saadiq

Today's featured artist is probably as well known for his production work as he is for his performances. R&B Legend Raphael Saadiq, former lead singer of Tony! Toni! Toné!, has produced for a veritable who's who in the music industry including D'angelo's Untitled (How Does It Feel), which landed D'angelo a Grammy award. Saadiq, a bassist, is known to feature superb bass work on his tracks. A powerful player in the soul music movement, Saadiq recently turned the clocks back with his vintage album The Way I See It. With over 20 years of classics under his belt and no signs of slowing down anytime soon, Saadiq is certainly one to watch.

Song: Love That Girl
Artist: Raphael Saadiq
Album: The Way I See It (2008)

With good reason The Way I See It was chosen by iTunes as the best album of 2008, Love That Girl surely was a deciding factor in that decision. This song will grab you by the ear and pull you in like an angry grandmother. The first thing that will grab you is, what seems to be, the inverted bass line from The Temptations My Girl. Stevie Wonderesque drums will force your feet to tap to the beat, you simply have no choice but to obey. The lyrics are flawlessly vintage, and innocently portray a man's pursuit of a beautiful woman who has caught his eye. Love That Girl just FEELS good, it'll have your nose wide open.

Listen here

Lyrics here

Song: Thinking Of You
Artist: Tony! Toni! Toné!
Album: House Of Music (1996)

Smooth, smooth, smooth. The guitars and bass on this song are just outrageous. Thinking Of You is the kind of song that's so good it makes you just wanna punch an old lady in the face. Raphael has a way of building an atmosphere on every song he touches. Just like Love That Girl, Thinking Of You is just as much about the feel as it is the sound. Near the end Saadiq exclaims,
"You know sometimes I wanna call America's Most Wanted, 'cause you're most wanted in my life".
Priceless. Good luck ever getting this song out of your head, not that you'll want to.

Listen here

Song: Kelly Ray (iTunes Bonus track)
Artist: Raphael Saadiq

Album: The Way I See It (2008)

I find it hard to believe that anyone, especially any music fan, could not absolutely love The Way I See It. Kelly Ray is like finding a million dollars under your couch when you thought you were broke, like a crack fiend finding enough dope for just one last smoke, like being upgraded to first-class from coach. Raphael ties his skinny tie, dons his Al Green cap and pilots this track into groovy territories.

For more Saadiq be sure to pick up The Way I See It, and Tony! Toni! Toné!'s House Of Music.

Day 18: Werewolves of London

Hello, today's song is an old favorite and a fun classic. Warren Zevon was a talented musican and vocalist most famous for songs from his third album Excitable Boy. Early in his career he worked in studio and on tour with the Everly Brothers, and roomed with Stevie Nicks. He often was a guest on David Letterman, even serving as substitute band leader for Paul Shaffer (Letterman's sidekick) on several occasions. Eventually, he would sadly succumb to mesothelioma. After his passing he won 2 Grammys for his final album The Wind, these were his first and only Grammys.
So, lets get into it!

Song: Werewolves of London
Artist: Warren Zevon
Album: Excitable Boy (1978)

What has been referred to (by me) as "The Funnest Song of All-Time" features sensible drums, and air guitariffic chords, all being carried upon the broad shoulders of an ingenious piano melody. After a few verses the songs breaks into a brief psychedelic guitar solo. The opening line, “I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand,” won a BBC Radio 2 listeners’ poll in 2004 for the greatest opening song line in rock history, but my favorite line in the song comes in the final verse,
"I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's,
and his hair was perfect, nip!".
Accompanying Zevon, are Fleetwood Mac members John Mcvie (drums) and Mick Fleetwood on bass. Oh, and did I mention that Werewolves of London features, probably, the greatest chorus ever. Ah-oooo!

Day 17: Birdland

The day's forecast calls for a torrential downpour of Jazz. Weather Report was a jazz fusion band in the '70s and '80s. I was first introduced to today's song by my professor in Jazz appreciation. I would give myself an A on this song, because I appreciate the dickens out of it. Early to midway through Weather Report's journey, bassist Jaco Pastorius joined the band bringing along his funkiness. Jaco is revered for his skills on bass, but shining brighter than him is the band as a whole. Simply put, when it comes to Weather Report: This is why it's hot.

Song: Birdland
Artist: Weather Report
Album: Heavy Weather (1977)

A beautiful thing about Birdland is the way that one instrument leads you right into the next in the same way that elements in a painting lead your eye from one to the next. This song is so swingin' man! Really take the time to appreciate each instrument. Each one is played so expertly that I simply cannot praise one musician, or even a few. The whole band presents a unified front. Listen for the vocals sung along with the saxaphone, blending so well that it's hard to decipher the vocals from the instruments. Birdland really is a cohesive slice of funky wholesome goodness that you simply must hear to believe.

Day 16: Run This Town

He's baaaack! Whatever it is you wanna call him (Hov, Jigga, Mr. Carter,), Jay-Z has returned to form. In recent years you've probably heard more Jay-Z on Entertainment Tonight than you have through the speakers of passersby on the streets. His return from retirement has, thus far, resembled Michael Jordan's comeback with the Wizards. He's been good, even showing flashes of his former dominance but has clearly shown that he's not the best in the game anymore. But Jay is going back to the Blueprint, for a third time. In a genre currently being dominated by pop-rappers like Lil Wayne, Soulja Boy, and Drake, Jay's timing couldn't be better. A little tidbit for those of you who might think Jay-Z is just a demeaning, superficial thug: following the hurricane Katrina disaster Jay-Z donated 1 million dollars to the American Red Cross relief effort. He has also worked to fight the global water shortage, pledging a world tour to raise awareness, and in '06 he took part in a documentary titled Diary of Jay-Z: Water for Life. Today's song follows the release of his poignant single D.O.A (Death of Auto-Tune), and gives you a mouthful of what to expect when The Blueprint 3 hits store shelves September 11th. Oh and by the way, Rihanna and KanYe West both join Jay-Z on this track.
The Roc is definitely in the building!

Song: Run This Town

Artist: Jay-Z Feat. Rihanna & Kanye West
Album: The Blueprint 3 (2009)

The Blueprint 3,
Jay's pièce de résistance
against current music trends, features a heavy reliance on real instrumentation rather than electronic beats, and absolutely no auto-tune. Although "the Michael Jordan of rap" has put up several attempts since coming out of retirement, this effort is his first to hit nothing but the bottom of the net since his famous "last shot" from the top of the key (The Black Album). Run This Town bites down hard and won't let go. The production (handled by Kanye), which features a mean guitar riff, sets the tone for this powerful anthem right from the start. Rihanna, looking better than ever, is fierce and badder than ever (watch her face in the video). She sings the hook with absolute fire, raising the question: can anyone sing a hook better than this girl? Kanye delivers his verse straight from the gut, with the intensity exhibited on Jesus Walks, in an effort to shut the mouths of his incessant critics. And Jay-Z makes clear the difference between a Grown Man and a lil' boy. Quite frankly, Jay-Z, Rihanna, and Kanye have never been stronger than on this effort.

Listen and watch here

If you want more Jay-Z be sure to pick up The Blueprint 3 September 11th.

Day 15: A Woman's Worth

Ladies, ladies, ladies, ladies, ladies...How my ladies doin' out there? Fellas, what you know about a woman's worth? Better stand up and take note. Alicia Keys first came into our lives at the age of 4 on The Cosby Show, since then she has been working hard to empower women and save the world, all between recording classic albums and winning Grammys. In recent years she has returned to acting, starring in films such as Smokin' Aces and The Secret Life of Bees. With her philanthropic work and compositions like No One and Unbreakable she has proven to truly be a Superwoman. Remove your caps gentlemen, there is a lady present.

Song: A Woman's Worth
Artist: Alicia Keys
Album: Songs In A Minor

A smooth cut off Alicia's debut album, A Woman's Worth paints a beautiful portrait of femininity seen all too seldom in pop culture. A far cry from the portrayal of women as possessions, Ms. Keys starts the bidding high,

"You could buy me diamonds
You could buy me pearls

Take me on a cruise around the world

Baby you know I'm worth it"
and makes it clear that it's about much more than material gifts
"Wanna please wanna keep wanna treat your woman right
Not just dough but to show that you know she is worth your time
You will lose if you chose to refuse to put her first
She will and she can find a man who knows her worth".
A true role model, Keys shines on vocals, lyrics, and production, all while flexing her strength of character. A Woman's Worth is a both a tribute to Real Men, and an anthem for ladies the world over.

Day 14: You Are The Best Thing

Good day! I hope you've all been enjoying the song selections thus far. We're almost halfway there, with 23 followers and no word back on the job proposal it's looking like I won't quite hit the mark I aimed for. But it's cool, in the process I've discovered a new love for writing and of course for music, so in any case this has been far from a lost cause, and I have you all to thank for that. So, Thank You. Today I will introduce you to Ray LaMontagne, he's kind of shy, but you'd never guess it from hearing his powerful voice. He was spurred to quit his job as a shoemaker and begin singing and writing songs one morning after being woken by Treetop Flyer by Stephen Stills. He looks something like Jesus in the 70's (see below), and sounds something like a cross between Van Morrison, Joe Cocker, and some other guy. Followers (hehe!, I have "followers"), You Are The Best Thing that ever happened to me. Well, lets not carried away, you all are a good thing. Perhaps not the best, but good, and I appreciate your support.

Song: You Are The Best Thing
Artist: Ray LaMontagne
Album: Gossip In The Grain (2008)

You Are The Best Thing kicks into action with a bad, and I mean BAD, horns arrangement before transitioning smoothly into a sugary sweet guitar favored melody. The instrumentation is classic and sounds as if it could have been taken from The Temptations and slowed down to fit Ray's gruff, smooth vocal delivery. Mr. LaMontagne raspily grits his way through this sweet, carefree tune like only he can. As long as You Are The Best Thing is playing through your speakers your loved one will seem like a saint, Ray cannot be held responsible for what happens when the music stops.

Day 13: Lonely Avenue

Today's song is a double feature. I present to you something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue, all in one song. Lonely Avenue, originally recorded by Ray Charles in 1956 and more recently covered by Stephen Marley in 2007, is a classic i'm-blue-without-you type of song. Ray Charles was a blind singer-songwriter/musician most noted for his soulful voice and his instrumentation on piano. He could make country music into soul, and national anthems into chart-topping pop hits. He was indeed a Genius. Stephen Marley, son of Bob and Rita Marley, is a 37 year old musician/producer. Of the Marley kids Stephen has the voice most closely resembling Bob's, in my opinion. He has produced much of his brothers' music, as well as the album Chant Down Babylon, which features modern remixes of Bob Marley hits. He released his first solo album Mind Control in 2007. Come and take a walk down Lonely Avenue, it'll be well worth you time. 2 great artists, 2 great versions of 1 great song.

Song: Lonely Avenue
Artist: Ray Charles|Stephen Marley
Album: Yes Indeed! (1958)|Mind Control (2007)

The warm, soulicious voice of Ray Charles is backed by a simple but lovely piano rhythm. A saxophone solo is featured midway through the song, adding a smooth jazzy feel to the song. Lonely Avenue, which was penned by Doc Pomus, was one of the first of countless Ray Charles hits.
Stephen Marley's cover of the song features a bluesy reggae bass line and the signature Marley vibe. Beautiful backing vocals are notable, as well as the insightful ad lib "Stand in love, don't fall in love". Stephen does a wonderful job of breathing new life into a timeless classic.

Day 12: Amy Winehouse

Today's featured artist is a young lady with immense talent whose personal struggles have been well documented, but today we will not be distracted by the negativity slung at her. No, today we will focus on the incredible gifts that she contributes to the world. At just 25 years of age, Amy Winehouse is the proud owner of an an absolutely timeless and versatile voice, as well as 5 Grammy Awards. Her retro musical stylings utilize elements of R&B, Jazz, Soul, Rock & Roll, and Ska, which combine to create a unique sound. If you don't already know, you soon will see that Amy's voice and talent is undeniable.

Song: Valerie
Album: Back to Black [Bonus Disc] (2006)

This track finds Amy singing a lively cover of The Zutons hit song Valerie. She gives it a more upbeat, lighthearted feel than the original with the help of backing band The Dap-Kings. A song that'll make you wanna snap your fingers and get up and dance, Winehouse's rendition of Valerie is sure to win over the hearts of Amy newcomers as well as established fans.

Listen to Valerie here

Lyrics here

Song: Will You Love Me Tomorrow?
Album: Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004 Soundtrack)

In a sweet and soothing performance Amy covers The Shirelles 1960 chart-topper with beautiful results. A song scantily clad by an acoustic guitar and little else, leaves Amy vulnerable and nearly naked, exposing every inch of her supple, sultry voice. Even the most steadfast fans of the original must admit that Ms. Winehouse does Will You Love Me Tomorrow the justice it deserves.

Song: Help Yourself
Album: Frank (2003)

Help Yourself is written to an apparently demeaning man with higher expectations of his partner than he probably deserves. A wonderful horn section backs Amy as she sets him straight with her honey-sweet voice
"You've got a degree, A in philosophy, So you think you cleverer than me ('cause you so smart), but I'm not just some drama queen, 'cause it's where you're at not where you've been."
Help Yourself is a beautiful, laid back track perfect for a Sunday drive.

I hope I have helped to shine light on the talent of a beleaguered star. Take note of this bright young icon, to paraphrase Amy "Yes she's been black but when she comes back you'll know, know, know!"

Day 11: Good Lives

What do you get when you cross Chuck Norris with Richard Simmons? Well I assure you it is not the band we're covering today. Recently reunited rock trio Eve 6 is back on tour and gearing up for a comeback album. Their last album's sales were so unimpressive that their label decided to drop them, causing Eve 6 to disband. Known for their witty and vivid lyrics Eve 6's biggest hits are Inside Out, Promise, and the graduation song du jour Here's To The Night. We'll be listening to a song from the album that caused their demise.

Song: Good Lives
Artist: Eve 6
Album: It's All In Your Head (2003)

Good Lives will make you wonder why this album failed. Imaginitive lyrics
"There is no floor 13 there's not even a second story, you've got one to tell and it's sad as hell,"
..."This kid came over and I let him crash, but he went into my wallet and he grabbed my cash,"
..."Set the clocks back we're not growing old,"
..."Promise that forever we will never get better at growing up and learning to lie",
tasty guitar licks, and salty vocalization by Max Collins combine to make a savory dish. A side of driving bass and drums complete the meal. Allow your ears to feast as this trio serves up a well rounded fare.

Day 10: Wash Away

When Folk singer Joe Purdy stepped out of bed this morning he never would have dreamt that one of his songs would be featured on Mulatto Music today, but lo and behold here it is. Purdy has independently released an astounding 10 albums in a span of just 8 years. He has had many songs featured on TV and film such as Grey's Anatomy and The Secret Life of Bees. You've probably heard a great song on a commercial and said "Wow! I love that song, who is that singing?" It's Joe.

Song: Wash Away
Artist: Joe Purdy
Album: Julie Blue (2004)

This song was made semi-famous from an appearance in season 1 of Lost, and is currently being featured in the Dawn Wildlife commercial. In Wash Away, Joe sits down on the porch with you and says "Hey, I know you're goin' through it right now my friend, but you're gonna survive the whole horrible mess." All the while he strums his guitar, and plays a hopeful little tune. After that he loans you bit of money and gives you a hug, uh, metaphorically speaking. Well, lyrically speaking he actually says
"I've got troubles oh, but not today, 'cause they're gonna wash away, they're gonna wash away."
But he really does play a hopeful tune on his guitar, see for yourself.

Day 9: Shepherd Moons

Namaste. Come in, sit down, close your eyes, and relax. Today we are visiting with vocalist, instrumentalist, and composer Enya. Hailing from Ireland, Enya is an artist who creates music in the New Age genre, she is probably most famous for Boadicea which has been sampled by The Fugees (Ready or Not), and Mario Winans (I Don't Wanna Know). Her music has probably made you cry at some point, as well as sent you into a deep state of relaxation - This is doubly true if you have partaken in transformational work. So, assume the lotus position and allow Enya to sweep you away with her magical voice layering.

Song: Shepherd Moons
Artist: Enya
Album: Shepherd Moons (1991)

The title track opens with Enya's ethereal voice, accompanied by the sound of piano keys being caressed ever-so-lightly. The whisper soft piano chords twinkle along, dancing on clouds to the sound of Enya's angelic murmuring. The most soothing, peaceful, relaxing song I know of, Shepherd Moons will make you feel like you're back in the womb.

For more Enya I highly recommend purchasing Paint The Sky With Stars: The Best of Enya

Until we meet again, peace.

Day 8: Long As I Can See The Light

Hello hello, we're just gonna jump right into things today. I'd like to introduce you to rock/swamp rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival. CCR reached the peak of their success around 1969-70, even performing as one of the headline acts at Woodstock '69. At the top of their success, lead man John Fogerty's controlling ways created a divide in the group causing them to disband. John Fogerty has the distinction of writing Proud Mary which CCR performed and notched at #2 on the Billboard charts, of course Tina Turner later recorded the song making many forget the original artist. CCR also has the distinction of having the most #2 hits without ever reaching #1 on the Billboard charts. Creedence also contributed their hit Fortunate Son to the stellar Forest Gump Soundtrack.

Song: Long As I Can See The Light
Artist: Creedence Clearwater Revival
Album: Cosmo's Factory (1970)

Cosmo's Factory was a rare gem, reaching #11 on the Billboard Soul Charts, quite an accomplishment for a popular white rock band. With a nicely done cover of a song made popular by Marvin Gaye (Heard It Through The Grapevine) and today's title track the presence of soul is easily felt and heard. Few vocalists could stand in for John Fogerty on Long As I Can See The Light and do the song any justice whatsoever. Fogerty sings from the toes, delivering just the type of screeching, soulful, gritty performance that he is known for. Just listen as he fights to keep each line of the song alive as long as possible, adding numerous stirring syllables to the ends. Creedence strays from their typical instrumentation with beautiful results adding the saxaphone, which acts as backup vocalist for John at times. Bassist Stu Cook moseys along adding a biting one-two punch when paired with the slow but sure drumming of Doug Clifford. Tom Fogerty, who normally drives the band with his infectious riffs, takes a back seat adding fleeting, complimentary, sentiments on guitar. All in all, this soulful effort from the normally rockin' Creedence Clearwater, is sure to infiltrate your ears and penetrate your heart.

Day 7: Beautiful

Well heidi hey, heidi ho! And how are you on this fine Tuesday morn? Hope you don't mind, we'll be taking the subway today. We'll be heading to Brooklyn circa 1998 to listen to 2 of New York, and Hip Hop's, finest emcees: Black Star. Scientifically speaking, Black Star is comprised of one part Mos Def, one part Talib Kweli, two of Hip Hop's foremost conscious emcees. After their album Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star dropped in 98, the pair went their separate ways, occasionally reuniting for a song here or there. Kweli has become a well respected lyricist, critically acclaimed artist, and at times garnered some commercial success. Mos Def, the much more commercially successful of the duo, has, besides releasing numerous albums, also appeared in countless films and TV shows, proving to be a superb actor. Joining them on this particular track is, the internationally known "Queen of Hip Hop Soul", Mary J. Blige.

Song: Beautiful
Artist: Black Star Ft. Mary J. Blige
Album: Unreleased (leaked via bootleg around 1998)

The track opens to find Mary J. Blige harmonizing while Mos Def and Talib Kweli chant rhythmically in the background. Mos rattles off the first verse in poetic fashion:
"I dream that I could paint you with words, but there were no colors bright enough, black or white enough, blue or green enough, it didn't mean enough"
..."I tried to practice my war like tactics, but in the clutch of your touch my armor just collapses"
... "My prayer is this: God protect my beloved and keep her covered, from the valley to the summer like the land undiscovered, like the stars are numbered you are so beautiful".
Kweli keeps it rolling with lyrics like:
"The breath for my life, my sister and my lover, used to have cold feet now you the warmth under my covers, I can't ignore your aura 'cause it grabbed me by the hand, like the moon pulled the tide and the tide pulled the sand".
In the third verse the duo continues to spit fire with unfettering fluidity, this time seamlessly switching back and forth like a crossfader. Pay close attention as Mos Def's voice fades out, Kweli's merges in and vice versa. From the start to the finish Beautiful is Real Hip Hop.

I added a poll up on the left side so you can let me know how I'm doing so far on the diversity front. Alright my friends, see ya next time!

Day 6: Quimbombo

Hello and welcome to our 6th day here at Mulatto Music. Today I'd like to take you on a trip into the heart of Miami to listen to a local band. PALO!, who epitomizes the Miami nightlife, is an afro-cuban funk band lead by the Grammy Award winning Steve Roitstein. They make an infectious brand of music, and on many nights you can watch them play at various Miami nightclubs, sometimes free of charge! PALO! is fortunate to have the lovely and spirited Leslie Cartaya on lead vocals blessing the mic in a wonderful way. Their aptly titled album This is Afro-Cuban Funk is chock full of funkified songs sure to lift your spirits, but to get the full PALO! experience you simply must see and hear them live. So if you like to dance and be surrounded by a crowd of happy people with the sound of something funky in your ear, come on down to Miami and check out PALO!

SONG: Quimbombo

ARTIST: PALO!
ALBUM: This is Afro-Cuban Funk (2009)

A standout on the album, Quimbombo is a relentlessly carefree, lighthearted, and happy song about a cuban dish made with okra, or so I'm told. Translated, the chorus goes roughly something like, "Quimbombo, Quimbombo, give me everything except the Quimbombo." Steve Roitstein, the man who makes PALO! go, is the main reason why heads nod and hips move whenever PALO! plays. The saxophone of Ed Calle hits real hard, but real smooth. But the star of the show is Leslie Cartaya, an absolute joy to watch perform. When Mz. Cartaya turns in her vocals, she turns your ears on end, and turns the place out. Go PALO! go!

You can hear Quimbombo (track #4), as well as other PALO! hits here: http://gopalo.com/

If you want more PALO! listen to Lengua Larga, La Habana Buena, and Crescencio.
Still want more? Pick up their album This is Afro-Cuban Funk and if you're in the Miami area be sure to catch a live performance (Psst! You may even win a free PALO! CD).

Hope you enjoyed the detour into Dade County! There's no telling where we'll stop next time on the Mulatto Music Train, so grab your friends and hop aboard.
If you enjoy what you've been reading, and more importantly what you've been hearing, don't forget to link up to the caboose and follow along!

Day 5: Sam Cooke

On the fifth day he told of an artist, and it was good. Sam Cooke, "The Man Who Invented Soul", is an artist much too significant to introduce just one song, so today I will introduce you to three Cooke Classics. Please know that even three songs by Sam paints such a limited picture of the incredible talent that he was, I strongly urge you to do your research on him and his music. Sam Cooke is, in a word, Soul. Sam, who crossed over from gospel to r&b/soul, was one of the greatest singer-songwriters ever, as well as a groundbreaking businessman. He became the first black artist to be paid an advance and retain ownership of his recordings, this in an era where even the most talented black artists seldom received more than a Cadillac and a pat on the back. He also started his own record label and publishing company. On top of all this, he played a pivotal role in the civil rights movement with his song A Change is Gonna Come, and through his friendships with Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, and Jim Brown. But sadly, Sam was taken from us much too soon. On December 11th, 1964 at the age of 33 Sam Cooke was shot and killed in what was controversially ruled a "justifiable homicide". So, without further ado I introduce you to the music of Sam Cooke.

Song: Having A Party (1962)
Having a Party truly, truly soothes my soul. I find myself at a loss for words as to how to explain the beauty that lies in this soulful and pure composition. You simply must listen. But listen with care. Listen to every instrument. The strings. The bass, oh dear God the bass! Listen to the harmony of Sam's sweet, sweet voice. You're in good hands with Sam, just lean back and drift away.

Listen here: http://www.last.fm/music/Sam+Cooke/_/Having+A+Party

View the lyrics here: http://artists.letssingit.com/sam-cooke-lyrics-having-a-party-9rmq1fb

Song: That's Where It's At (1964)
In the first 3 seconds That's Where It's At transports you to heaven with eleven (count 'em) simple plucks on the bass, all before the song is even graced by Cooke's irresistible voice. In quite possibly the coolest, smoothest, grittiest song ever made Sam paints the most accurate and beautiful portrayal of a young romance, making sure not to leave out even the slightest of details. Thank God for Sam Cooke, and his incredible bass player (forgive me father for I know not his name).

Listen here: http://www.last.fm/music/Sam+Cooke/_/That%27s+Where+It%27s+At

Lyrics are here: http://www.lyricsdownload.com/sam-cooke-thats-where-its-at-lyrics.html

Song: A Change is Gonna Come (1965)
A Change is Gonna Come tells of the heartaches and struggles facing a man of color living in America in the mid 20th century, and proclaims with absolute faith, even in the face of direct denial, the hope of a people that change would soon come. The words of Cooke still rang loud and clear 44 years after the song's release as Barack Obama, upon being elected the first black President of the United States, announced "It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America."

Listen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-NH5gA4JP8

View the lyrics: http://www.stlyrics.com/songs/s/samcooke5349/changegoncome223417.html

The three songs featured today may all be found on the compilation album Portrait of a Legend. Also take note that Sam had a flourishing gospel career before crossing over, so there is also treasury of golden gospel tunes. A good album to pick up is Jesus Gave Me Water by the Soul Stirrers - a gospel group Sam sang in before turning solo.

To know me, you must first get to know Sam Cooke. We must not let the music of Mr. Cooke fade away, go and tell tale of his wondrous compositions of soul. "Sam Cooke's yours, he'll never grow old"
